Funnily enough my old blog is dead because it has been more than 2 years since I last updated the software. Cue the spammers and hackers. Infiltration was completed last week.
Part of me panicked. There’s about 7 years of crap hidden behind the FTP that I can’t get the time to access to do the clean up and updating. Stuff going back to when I was single. The time when I met and dated and marred Beau. The pregnancies and birth of my 2 children. Wedding planning stuff. Pictures.
And then I had the thought that it isn’t really that important. Is it? Ultimately, no. Well, sort of – it was my journal for those years. There is a part of me that would like to at least get access long enough to archive the record. I think my kids would get a kick out of reading some of it later. It is a sort of time capsule of the times. But most of it is trivial drivel – what I ate for lunch with my coworkers on any given day, the random kook call at work, the mundane complaint about pregnancy and/or parenthood. Then again, there are gems – the priceless jewels of love from friends whose comments carried me through my time on bed rest while pregnant with Jesse. Some recipes that I never really wrote down anywhere else.
All is not lost – I can always get access to the content. It’s just a matter of time – me finding enough of it to do the work to get it. And once that is done the old blog will be back. But I’m not sure that I’ll put it back up. Most of my readers have moved on to other things. The few loyalists are probably my family and people I actually know – they can get the info directly from me. And then there’s Facebook. That’s where I spend most of my online time.
I haven’t received a single email asking about the blog. Clearly, no one was visiting, except me. So maybe it’s time to let it die with dignity.
